Turning off the lights at ERSNA
Enchanted Rock SNA is preparing an application for special designation as a dark sky area. TPWD has diligently pursued limiting the lights at the park to give visitors the opportunity to experience a truly dark sky, something which has been denied residents of most of the world by aggressive lighting of the night. There is now a sky quality monitor at the park; readings can be found here.
There is a presentation at the park on dark sky concepts on May 16th, 7:30 PM, by Bill Wren of the MacDonald Observatory. Bill's presentations are fascinating. The Fredericksburg City Council is considering an ordinance to regulate outdoor lighting on April 21st; if you are a fan of the Rock, their decision is of interest to you even if you don't live in Fredericksburg. You can express your opinion to them at firstname.lastname@example.org . Those of us who live in Austin or San Antonio or Dallas or Houston know what you have lost with the lighting of the night by commercial enterprises and cities. Those of us who are blessed to live in the hill country are hoping to avoid that future.
